I am against no bid contracts pretty much across the board.

I think more than the site's substance its a clear shot that politics at a local level is starting to change and catch up some with the web generation.

I uploaded JaxPolitics to the JaxReader. I predict that JaxPolitics will become a very strong outlet. I have liked and agreed with most, but all posts are well thought out and well written. It is a new day. And everyone is a gift. Have fun. Don't settle. We don't have to any more.

This LOOKS AWESOME! Food drink and celebrity all in the beautiful and historic 5 Points Theatre. We were the original hollywood as you may know. I saw Slum Dog at the theatre and am totally blown away with the quality of screen image (we sat in the back of a packed house) and the awesomeness of the sound system.

Speaking of film history at Southbank Sunrise the little museum that could has a small film exhibit, scale models, and a cool train set! Set your clock and have a great day to start a great week!

In this tough economy, the number of men, women and children being served at the Sulzbacher Center is increasing every day. We had eighty children who made the center their home over the holidays. We are seeing close to fifteen hundred people in our health clinic each month and we are now serving over twelve hundred meals to the hungry every day. Any help you can give by helping us promote our event would be greatly appreciated.

Symposium (Free)And Optional Tour ($55) To Honor Modern Architects And Architecture

Jacksonville, Florida, February 16, 2009.

The Jacksonville Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and DOCOMOMO/US Florida are again sponsoring a one-day symposium highlighting the achievements of architecture from the Recent Past in Northeast Florida.
Modern Architectural Classics at the Beach will be held at the St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal Church (465 11th Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach) on March 7, 2009. A morning session with presentations by North Florida’s most well-know architects and by nationally recognized architectural scholars will begin at 9:00 a.m. and last until 12:00 p.m.
One of the most outstanding structures in Northeast Florida, St. Paul’s by the Sea was designed by Blake Ellis and completed in 1966. The Valdosta, Georgia, architect will also be on hand to discuss the church, which is his favorite project.
An optional tour of Jacksonville’s Beaches other modern masterpieces will depart at 12:30 p.m. The tour – including a box lunch – will be offered at a $55. Thanks to a generous contribution from Title Sponsor the Haskell Company, the morning presentations will be free and open to the general public. The economics of oceanfront property threatens the sustainability of many outstanding examples of Modern architecture along the Northeast Florida coast. The symposium and tour will hopefully raise public awareness of these works and promote their preservation.
The tour will feature the Milam House, Paul Rudolph’s last design for a Florida residence and one of the most famous Modern buildings in Florida (http://archrecord.construction.com/recordHouses50/03_1963.asp). The symposium and tour will pay special attention to projects in Jacksonville Beach and Atlantic Beach by William Morgan (http://www.williammorganarchitects.com).
Many of Florida’s most notable architects and architectural historians will participate in the symposium and tour on March 7.
For 150 years, AIA has been the voice of American architects. The Jacksonville chapter ( http://www.aiajacksonville.org ) has 365 members working together and with their communities to create more valuable, healthy, secure, and sustainable buildings and cityscapes.
Headquartered in Paris, DOCOMOMO is the international working party for the DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings, sites, and neighborhoods of the MOdern MOvement. DOCOMOMO/US is the working party of DOCOMOMO in the United States. DOCOMOMO/US Florida http://www.docomomofl.org ), a subchapter of DOCOMOMO/US, was organized in 2007. The organization has sponsored numerous educational events and has worked for the preservation of Modern landmarks across the state.
A similar event last year at the Cummer Gallery of Art in Jacksonville was sold out. (St. Paul’s by the Sea can accommodate more than twice as many attendees as the Cummer auditorium.)

Our View: The Stimulus

Since when did building new highways and bridges become the only thing "real," the only thing "worthy," the only thing "smart," the only thing that is given a pass as "not pork"? Listening to some members of Congress and the media, you would think that the only people out of work are road builders and the only thing that stimulates the economy is buying more asphalt and steel. Haven't they heard of the highway to nowhere? Haven't they heard of highway-induced sprawl that has killed as many neighborhoods as it created?

Heaven help us if we invest in transit. Right. Now there's a stupid move. It only decreases our dependence on foreign oil, reduces congestion, saves families the cost of another car, and builds something we clearly need for the future. See? Stupid.

And what about the arts? Oh no, we wouldn't want to invest there. Museums, theatres and art centers got lumped in with a group of other forbidden projects, including casinos, community centers, zoos and swimming pools, in an attempt -- what? -- to make sure we didn't waste money on those wasteful "amenities."

The latest stimulus deal even cut the weatherization of federal buildings. Yeah, let's keep emitting that carbon and paying high utility bills for the pleasure of doing so.

How much sense does this make? I'm not fussing about the stimulus or the amount of it. I trust Paul Krugman to know a whole lot more than I do about this, so bring it on. But we have to change the public dialogue on what kind of spending makes sense because it is Alice through the looking glass at the moment, when up means down and down means up.

We'll get more of what we got because that is what is most familiar. It is, as one colleague put it, a failure of imagination writ large. Those of us who support alternatives had better learn to sharpen our message.
